Sonia Tuttiett trained as a professional musician. She developed a keen interest in embroidery and has been teaching and designing alongside her musical career for the last 18 years. Sonia works in Newham, East London and leads several community projects with people from all faiths and cultural backgrounds. She has been working with East London Textile Arts since 2008 after spending time training in pattern cutting and screen printing with a small workshop based in East Ham. She also received training in textile art techniques at Morley College.
As lead textile tutor with East London Textile Arts she has worked with organisations such as the V&A, The Watts Gallery, the Artworkers Guild, the Hellenic Centre, Epping Forest, the Jagonari centre and the Malayalee Association and various schools. She also leads embroidery sessions for Newham Council, teaching in local libraries and community centres.
In 2016 Sonia received an Embroiderers Guild Beryl Dean Award Commendation for Teaching Excellence (Inspiration in the Community). She is a member of the Artworkers Guild. Sonia is lead artist on A Stitch in Time at Who Are We? working alongside a group of community embroiderers from East London Textile Arts.
